How big is it?

-33 million triangles...not "source" triangles, the engine is actually handling 33 million triangles and using LOD to keep the scene renderable.

-The heightmap file is 48 mb.

-Vertex buffers have to be deleted and uploaded to the graphics card dynamically, or else my 8800 320 MB card runs out of video memory.

-Approximately 50 square km.
